Dedicated Servers

Frequently Asked Questions about dedicated servers

  • What service level guarantees (SLA) are applicable on my dedicated server hosting?

    We think offering professional support and service guarantees is one of the key ingredients of a succesful dedicated server hosting. A FirstServed dedicated server comes with the FirstServed 'Standard' SLA.

    This service level agreement already offers you a lot of advantages: thorough server monitoring, Next Business Day (NBD) response times for critical alarms, advanced firewall services, remote reboot services, FirstServed passive backup...

    If you require more guarantees you can always choose a higher service agreement level at an additional monthly cost.

  • Is my server or connection being monitored?

    Each dedicated server or server housing is monitored by the FirstServed monitoring system. The monitoring system that FirstServed uses is based on nagios, an enterprise monitoring system that can be seen as 'industry standard' by now.

    By default, the following basic checks take place every minute for a dedicated server or co-location:

    • Is the server vailable through a PING command;
    • Is the HTTP service available;
    • Is the FTP service available;
    • Is the SMTP service available;
    • Are Remote Desktop and VNC services up and running;
    • If it's a Linux server, is the SSH service up and running;

    For each check, a priority is given. An alert will be sent out immediately if the server does not respond on a PING command.

    If the HTTP service gives a timeout, it will generate a warning. Only after a second check and failure, the FirstServed monitoring system will determine whether the service is down or not (is it a simple timeout, or is the service really unavailable).
    For or IP services and huosing customers, the uplink of the core switches to the rack is being actively monitored.
    Aside these checks, the FirstServed dedicated servers and co-location servers get additional checks based on SNMP (Simple Network Messaging Protocol) such as CPU load, available disk space, memory usage, CPU temperature, availability of certain software services and more...

    Also the measurement of network traffic on both network interfaces is done by the monitoring system. This allows you as a customer, and FirstServed as your service provider, to have a clear image of the bandwidth your dedicated server or co-located server needs.

    As a dedicated server customer - based on your service level - you may also be alerted by our monitoring system in case an alert is being triggered.

    FirstServed can add additional services to the monitoring system on your demand so even special applications or services can be monitored.

  • Can I change the firewall configuration of my server by myself?

    FirstServed only uses hardware firewall units. Each dedicated server and server in co-location in our network is protected by two redundant firewalls.
    By default we open the most frequently used ports, for example HTTP, HTTPS and FTP traffic.
    The ports that are applicable for remote management and maintenance of your server such as SSH, VNC and Remote Desktop are only available through a VPN connection. This is an additional security measure for your server.

    If you require additional incoming and outgoing ports on our firewall for your server, it is sufficient to contact our support desk.
    Our employees will be happy to help you with establishing the correct firewall configuration based on your demands.
    You can not alter the configuration yourself. Customers who prefer a dedicatd firewall setup may get access to their firewall on request.

  • What is network bonding on a dedicated server configuration?

    Bonding of network interfaces makes sure that the two physical network interfaces of your server are seen as one virtual interface on the operating system. This virtual network interface can be used and set up as a normal network card.

    Network bonding offers several advantages: if one of the network interfaces fails, the virtual interface will remain online without interruption. There is also another advantage: the bandwidth of both the physical adapters can be used as one interface what doubles the capacity of your connection.

    Our dedicated Windows and Linux servers always have multiple network interfaces that can be configured with bonding on demand. The connection of the network interfaces with our switches makes sure you have a guaranteed redundant connection to the Internet without a single point of failure (SPOF).

  • Can I visit the datacenter?

    People or companies who are interested in our rack housing, server housing and dedicated server hosting services can visit the FirstServed infrastructure in the datacenter.

    A visit to the FirstServed datacenter is only available for existing and future customers and can only take place by appointment. For security reasons, you as a customer, will only gain access to the datacenter under guidance of a FirstServed employee.

    If you would like to make an appointment and would like to have more information on our dedicated server and server housing services, you may contact our office on +32 (0)3 230.85.82.

  • What is the difference between a dedicated server hosting and server housing (colocation)?

    Companies that prefer a dedicated server hosting rent a server configuration at FirstServed. Your dedicated server will be installed and comes by default with soft- and hardware support, 24/7 omnitoring and a predetermined amount of network bandwidth permonth.

    If you prefer the server housing or server co-location formula, you will have to provide your own hardware and installation of server software. You will have a predetermined amount of network bandwidth per month.

    The great advantage of a dedicated server hosting: the management of your server is entirely done by FirstServed. If you would like to focus 100% on your core business and do not have the time to do the daily maintenance of your server, this is the best solution for you.

    The advantage of server housing or server co-location is that after buying the server and the hardware investment is payed, you have a lower monthly cost. If you have experience with servers and you already have the hardware, then this is probably your best option.

  • What is dedicated server hosting?

    FirstServed dedicated server hosting places the focus on the rental of a personal physical server. As a FirstServed customer, you rent a personal hardware server for a fixed amount per month with optionally additional services such as backup etc. This server is of course installed in the FirstServed datacenter and has excellent connectivity.

    FirstServed is 100% responsible for the technical maintenance of your machine - both for hard- and software - and makes sure your applications run smooth.

    Dedicated server hosting is mainly interesting if you would like to enjoy the benefits of a personal server for a fixed amount of money per month: superiour performance linked to a superiour price. You do not need to worry about the latest updates, security patches, connectivity or hardware... this is all done by FirstServed.

    In many ways, the dedicated server contract is comparable with a financial renting formula of a car with included maintenance.

    We always advice our customers to choose a tailor-based configuration so they have the perfect tool to get the job done.

  • Can I get bandwidth statistics for my server?

    Customers who have a dedicated server hosting or server housing (co-location) have access to the extended bandwidth graphs on our selfcare website. These graphs show you the bandwidth usage over time for your server, per day, week or month.

  • Is the FirstServed network redundant?

    Our network is built up with the highest level of redundancy, speed and connectivity in mind.

    Each link in the FirstServed network is dedoubled so single hops can not be responsible for a network failure (there are no SPOF or Single Points Of Failure) or the unreachability of your server.

    • We have multiple connections to the Internet through seperate uplink providers.
    • The connections on our network pass through two individual and redundant BGP routers.
    • The routers are linked to redundant aggregated gigabit switches.
    • The gigabit switches are connected to redundant firewalls.
    • The firewalls are linked to gigabit switches, all redundant installed of course.
    • Each dedicated server is connected to two seperate gigabit switches and has two power supplies.
    • Each rack has seperate power circuits (A and B feed), each server power supply is connected to one feed.
  • What service level guarantees (SLA) are applicable to a dedicated server?

    We take great care in providing an excellent service and support on which you may count. A FirstServed dedicated server comes by default with a 'Standard' SLA.

    This service level agreement already offers loads of advantages: extended monitoring, Next Business Day (NBD) reaction times for critical alerts, advanced firewall services, advanced monitoring, remote reboot, FirstServed passive backup...

    If you need even more guarantees you may choose a higher service level at additional monthly cost.

  • Is my dedicated server protected against hackers?

    Each dedicated server is installed behind the FirstServed redundant hardware firewall. The usage of our hardware firewall is standard for any kind of dedicated server hosting.

    Optionally you may ask for the FirstServed Intrusion Detection systeem. All traffic to your server will be analysed so hacking attempts or malusage is easier to trace.
